What is international health insurance?

International health insurance (aka expat health insurance) is medical insurance designed for those who are living and working abroad.

What does international health insurance cover?

Coverage varies by plan, but generally includes hospital admission and treatments for medical conditions. Routine treatment and preventive care coverage are also included or can be added to the core plans. See our reviews on different providers for more information on what plans they have and what those plans cover.

I have health insurance now, can I just use that?

Generally the plan that you may have already in your home country does not cover you when living or working abroad. (Check with your current health insurance provider to confirm.) So, you’d need to get a plan that covers you specifically in the country that you plan to relocate to.

Do I have to get international health insurance through an employer?

No. There are many providers, including the ones above that we’ve reviewed that provide international health insurance directly to individuals and families.

What’s the difference between international health insurance and travel insurance?

If you’ve ever had health insurance through an employer or have gotten through the Exchange (i.e. government Health Insurance Marketplace), international health insurance is similar to those insurance plans, but provides coverage when you’re living abroad. International health insurance is designed to provide health care, including routine and emergency medical care, to those living and working abroad for a long period of time (e.g. one year).

Travel insurance on the other hand only covers emergency medical treatment while you are in another country for a short period of time (e.g. during vacation). Travel insurance might also provide coverage for flight cancellations or lost personal belongings; international health insurance does not provide coverage for these situations.

When you’re applying for a visa to work or live in another country, international health insurance is generally what’s required—not travel insurance.
